Mangaroa Valley

This project was all about creating flow - connecting the main home to the pool and pool house in a way that felt natural, open, and completely integrated. What once was a disjointed outdoor space with an old, unused fish pond in the middle has now become a seamless and functional extension of the home.

The fish pond, while once a feature, had become more of an obstacle, cutting off the natural movement between spaces and blocking views. Removing it opened everything up, allowing us to create a much stronger visual and physical connection right through from the main living area to the pool.

The key element in stitching it all together was the paving. We used large-format pavers with a soft, natural tone that sat beautifully within the surrounding architecture and garden. The choice wasn’t just about aesthetics - it was about creating clean, clear lines of movement and sight. These pavers not only defined the paths but also subtly guided you from one area to the next without ever feeling forced. The joints were kept tight and neat, giving a crisp finish that works just as well barefoot as it does under outdoor furniture.

One of the most satisfying parts of this design is the clear visibility. From almost any point - whether you're standing in the lounge, lounging by the pool, or sitting in the pool house - you can see the entire space. That openness makes everything feel more expansive and connected, while also keeping an eye on the kids in the pool a lot easier.

In the end, it’s a space that now feels like one cohesive outdoor room - clean, simple, and flowing just as it should.
